Minimise your influenza risk

With the flu season approaching, take steps to minimise your influenza risk2010 has been declared The Year of the Lung. This is a reminder to maintain an exercise program and look after our lungs.

Influenza experts have reminded Australians that influenza, “flu”, is not just a health risk for older people.  Of those hospitalised annually with suspected or confirmed influenza, 80% are younger than 65.  “Many people under 65 years are not aware of the risks from contracting influenza, nor the benefits of having the vaccine,” commented Dr Alan Hampson OAM, Chair of the Influenza Specialist Group (ISG) and consultant to the World Health Organisation.  “Now is a good time to speak with your GP about influenza vaccination, particularly as many people under 65 are now eligible for a free seasonal influenza vaccine,” advised Prof Lou Irving, ISG Director and Director of Respiratory Disease at Royal Melbourne Hospital.  To assess your own risk, you can go to www.influenzaspecialistgroup.org.au/influenza-risk-assessment-tool
